Activity Four

Personal Timeline Assignment

A timeline is a graphic representation of the important stages, events or steps in the chronology of your subject matter.

The timeline should allow the viewer to quickly identify your subject, and the time period that is being covered. A good timeline will incorporate graphics or ‘visuals’ that will help the viewer understand the information being communicated. The format may also help communicate the passage of time. For instance, important steps could be arranged along an outline of a ladder to indicate progression.

In designing your timeline it is important to decide before hand which events are important enough to be included in your timeline. You must describe these events briefly, but accurately so as to convey meaning without ‘crowding’ your timeline unnecessarily.

In this exercise, you are expected to construct a timeline of your life. Make sure you have a clear title and that you include some visual information (drawings, photographs, graphics, etc.). Your work will, in part, be assessed for its artistic merit. More specifically, your creation will be evaluated based on, neatness, completeness, spelling and grammar, and the overall effectiveness of your design relative to the task that you have been assigned.

Evolution of Democracy

"It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried" (Sir Winston Churchill, 1876-1965). Democracy itself didn't just appear. It has grown gradually over many centuries and taken different forms in various countries around the world. We will look at some of the most significant steps in the development of democracy, from the English Magna Carta in 1215 to the New Zealand Election Act of 1873 and the European Maastricht Treaty 1992.
